Mr. Williams was bright-eyed, going on about his ideal date, while Mr. Rose urged him on from the sidelines. They looked like squirrels begging nuts, their faces full of expectation.

"Then after we hit Mama's, maybe we keep drivin' on down to Vegas, do some gamblin', find us some fine blow ..."

I shook my head. "Hold it. First of all, it's against policy to even talk about anything of a personal nature, let alone accept dates. Second, just a few hours ago, you wanted to put out a contract on me, and now you want to take me to dinner? And did you ever think I might be married or have a boyfriend?"

"Policy can be broken for a stud like me," Mr. Williams said, unabashed.

"In six months he won't be a prisoner anymore either, so the policy doesn't hold," threw in Mr. Rose.

"And I was only tryin' to scare you wid that story 'bout havin' somebody cut you up." Mr. Williams laughed.

"And we both know you're single," Mr. Rose said, winking at Mr. Williams.

"Yeah," said Mr. Williams. "Women who got men are fat and easy. You're too skinny and nervous to have a man."

Tuesday

2 A.M.

Too skinny and nervous ? Is the nervous part from not having sex ? I thought only the skin was supposed to go bad. Oh God, now I'm worried that everybody who sees me is thinking, Poor thing, she isn 't getting any. What can I do? Is it my fault that my sex drive — tired of neglect — just up and drove away ?

How does the skinny part fit in ? Too desperate to eat ?

Full moon tomorroiv. Thank God I'm off. Pia has some kind of surprise for me and Simon. Hope she hasn't baked another one of her Far East concoctions. The last one worked well as a doorstop, but Simon chipped a tooth before we knew better.

Part of Dr. Meyers's atonement as imposed by Mr Pope was to make a formal apology to each of the nurses involved. Butter wouldn 't have melted in his mouth as he told each of us he was sorry for being such a dick. He was so mortified, he resembled the face on a bottle of poison.
